Details matter when measuring security operations, and it’s important to have clear eyes when developing your own metrics and evaluating the performance of your vendors.
Most security metrics are unhelpful at face value. Take a hypothetical 10 minute mean-time-to-detect (MTTD): does the clock start when the adversary did the bad thing, or when your security product generates a record of the bad thing?
Does the clock stop when a product alert is acknowledged by an analyst, or when the threat has been fully scoped and confirmed as threatening?
